Articles of agreement between Maurice Barrow of Barningham in the county of Suffolk, esquire, and Edmund Fernley of Gray's Inn, Middlesex, esquire, touching a marriage to be solemnized between the said Edmund and Elizabeth Shelton, youngest daughter of Henry Shelton, esquire, deceased. [1] Edmund covenants to purchase within 2 years of the marriage manor, etc., in Suffolk of the clear yearly value of £120 per annum and then to settle the capital messuages and as much land adjoining as shall be worth £80 per annum as a jointure upon Elizabeth for her life; upon their deaths all premises to go to their male issue and in default, such one moiety of the premises to their female issue. [2] If Edmund die before carrying out his covenants as in item [1], he agrees to leave by will to Maurice Barrow £2000 to be laid out in purchase of lands as in item [1]. [3] Maurice agrees to pay Edmund within a month of the marriage £600 as Elizabeth's marriage portion; Edmund thereupon to acquit by deed the said Maurice, Thomas Dandy, esq., and Thomas Dawson, gentleman, executors of Henry Shelton, deceased, of so much of Elizabeth's marriage portion as was appointed to be raised out of the profits etc., of the lands of the said Henry during the minority of Maurice Shelton, the only son of Henry.
